Imagine yourself in a foreign land and you need to translate a menu or you’re surrounded by signs but what do they say? You need to ask for help or directions but no one seems to speak your language. These are potential issues you might run into on your next trip abroad.
I’ll illustrate here all of this applications amazing features and explain what they do so that you know exactly how to use Google Translate!
I’ve traveled back and forth between the U.S. and Europe for decades. I speak just two languages, English and German, and my German is barely passable! BUT this travel bug loves to explore the world! One of the first things I do when planning a trip is to download the local language, which relives a lot of anxiety.

Planning a trip? The first thing you need to do is download the Google Translate app on your android or iphone device. (Google Translate is already built into your Google Browser) The best thing about it is that it’s free!
Google Translate Desktop Version
I couldn’t even begin to plan international travel to nonspeaking English countries without Google Translate for desktop. It really is a game changer. I can navigate the web, select websites in any language, and with the click of a button Google will translate the text into English, wonderful…magical!
Here’s how to use Google Translate for Desktop
- Step 1: First, go to translate.google.com
- Step 2: Then, select a language.
Here are some of the languages the desktop version will translate for you: Simply click the caret icon (circled in red) to view the full list, or select “detect language” if you’re unsure.
- Step 3: Now, select either voice or text translation. Let’s give it a try. I’ll show you how to use both.

It’s pretty simple, type in the text you want to translate and let it go to work.

You’ll get your results in text format, but if you want to hear results spoken out loud or wonder if your pronunciation is correct, just tap on that “listen” icon, seen below in red:

How to Translate a Website with Google Translate
Doing travel research to a foreign country and the website is in a foreign language? Often, you’ll find the option on the page to select a different language, usually somewhere at the very top.
No option to select your language? No problem! Google Translate is built into the Google browser! Simply select the 3 dots at the top of the page and scroll down to “translate”! Magic!

Use the Google Translate App for your phone wherever you have cell service, wi-fi, or download offline translation of your chosen language!!! I recently downloaded Spanish for offline translation and in a few instances could not have gotten by without it!
First you’ll need to download the Google Translate App onto your phone. Below you’ll find an image of what you’ll see when you open the app. As you can see there is a “pen” option that allows you to enter text. The “microphone” is for translating spoken word.
There are 6 main things that you can do with the app that I want to discuss.

offline translation
Not every Google Translate feature works offline. For example, Live Translate requires a connection, while downloaded languages can be used for offline text translation and supported camera translations. Need to see what works and what does ahead of time? Try putting your phone in airplane mode and test out the features.

Translate a Menu or Sign With Your Camera!
So, I have this sign that I would like to translate:
Rather than typing in this entire thing, or having to try and read it out loud into the phone, Google Translate makes translating written text super easy. Simply choose the camera option:
Now, hover your phone over the sign and presto! translated! (notice the “instant” option in blue is selected.) Here are my “instant” results:
Want to translate something you’ve already photographed?
Use the camera option where you can choose live view or where you can access your photo gallery.
#3 Read the photo Translation!
Another interesting feature is that Google will read that translation for you. Just click the big button at the bottom, it appears it will be taking a photo, at the bottom there are some options for you to scroll through. One says “listen.” Give it a try!
#4 Translate a conversation: How to use the “Live Translate” feature for the Google Translate app!
Translate spoken word. This gives you the ability to translate an entire conversation. The conversation feature is one of my favorite things that Google Translate can do, and it will likely be one of yours too! So handy! It’s self explanatory…give it a try!
Here’s how to use the spoken word feature of the Google Translate app.
In the app choose “live translate” at the bottom of the screen.
You’ll need to choose a mode now. Here’s what it looks like:

Take turns speaking. Translations will play out loud. How cool is that!?
Text Only
Read translations on your phone. Nothing will be played out loud. I really like this option because it can get embarrassing having your phone scream out translations in a public setting!

It appears to be in Beta testing at the moment but you can learn a new language with Google Translate! How exciting is that? I tested it out and it takes you through some language learning exercises. Give it a try!

It can! If you have a picture that you need translated just open the app, select the camera icon, and then select the gallery option instead of the live view. As with menu translation, it’s not always perfect.
Does Google Translate work without Wi-Fi?
Many but not all of Googles features work without Wi-Fi. If you’re using Translate on the web, you’ll need to have cell service. If you are using the app you’ll find that most features work as long as you have downloaded the language ahead of time.
Can I use Google Translate on a plane?
Maybe! If you have access to wi-fi Google will work fully as intended. No wi-fi? if you have downloaded the language ahead of time most Google Translate features will indeed work.
Is Google Translate accurate enough for travel?
I find that Translate is a huge help when I don’t speak the langauge. As stated, it’s not perfect but if you’re in a pinch it can be a lifesaver.

Yes! and in my opinion it’s one of the best features of this app. Give it a try!
What should I download before traveling internationally?
It’s always a good idea to download the language ahead of your departure. You may find that the download works better while you have a good wi-fi signal. If you have downloaded a language already and arrive and find that you don’t have any service you’ll find that you can use most features.
