Hallstatt in September, [is it REALLY the ultimate time to visit?]

|

Hallstatt Austria is a magical place. It’s picture-perfect in every way. Are you considering traveling to Hallstatt in September and wondering if it’s a good time to visit?

The Austrian village of Hallstatt is nestled among towering misty mountains that you’ll see reflected off of the glasslike swan studded waters of Lake Hallstatt. Cobbled lanes meander past colorful alpine houses. It really is Austria’s prettiest town!

While summer draws oppressive crowds to this popular tourist destination and winter offers a perfect postcard-perfect snow dusting, early autumn reveals a quieter, more soulful side to this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Not only is September my favorite time of the year to visit this magical little town, I believe that September is perhaps the perfect time to visit the storybook village of Hallstatt and I’ll tell you why in this article!

Hallstatt September Photos

Most of the photos in this article were taken in the month of September. You’ll get a real look at what you can expect in September as far as blooming flowers and leaf and grass colors, and even get an idea of what time you can expect it to get dark! Plus, it’s less crowded in September so that’s fewer people you will have to jockey with to get that perfect shot!

Top benefits of visiting Hallstatt in September

In a nutshell, here are the benefits of a September trip:

Smaller Crowds: A More Authentic Experience

As the year progresses and we say farewell to summer, tourist crowds in this part of Europe naturally begin to thin out.

Most European school holidays are over, and the pace of tourism slows down. As the crowds thin out the quiet charm of the village returns once more.

Tour bus crowds from places like Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich that flood the village from mid-morning to late afternoon in May, June, July, and August, arrive less often.

This gives visitors the rare chance to experience Hallstatt more like a local with quiet mornings, uncrowded viewpoints, and room to breathe along the lakefront promenade.

Don’t be surprised if it’s just you and the swans down there by the lake! You might even find yourself alone on the charming Market Square or have the best photo spots all to yourself.

Traveling to Hallstatt Austria in September lets you slow down and take in it’s unrivaled beauty. You’re not jostling for space with other tourists or rushing through a checklist of attractions. Instead, you can experience a more meaningful visit.

Sit by the lake and listen to the lapping water. Wander peaceful narrow alleys and discover hidden architectural gems. Take time to chat with shopkeepers and artisans about their crafts. This is how travel should be.

It’s a chance to fall in love with Hallstatt on a deeper level and take away memories that go beyond Instagram snapshots.

Emerald Green Foliage and blooming flowers turns to color as Autumn Colors Begin to Emerge

If you arrive in early to mid-September grass and leaves are still stunning shade of green, and flowers are in bloom everywhere you look!

While September isn’t the peak of autumn foliage (that usually arrives in mid-October), the first signs of fall begin to show later in the month.

Leaves may have started to change color and the region dons a patchwork of gold, amber, and crimson as trees on surrounding hillsides begin their slow-turn toward fall.

Perfect Conditions for Outdoor Activities

With comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, September is a fantastic time to enjoy Hallstatt’s outdoor attractions:

Hiking

Trails like the Echern Valley Trail or the path to the Waldbachstrub Waterfall are especially rewarding this time of year. The crisp air and colorful surroundings make for invigorating walks.

Boat Tours

Take a scenic boat ride across Lake Hallstatt with less wait time and more serene surroundings.

Cycling

Rent a bike and explore the Salzkammergut region at your own pace. The well-marked cycling routes offer lake views, forest paths, and mountain backdrops.

Better Value for Money

September is considered shoulder season in Hallstatt. While it’s still popular, hotel prices generally drop from their August peak so you’re more likely to find accommodation at a better rate.

Traveling in September means you can enjoy a premium experience without the peak-season price tag.

Easier Logistics and Fewer Hassles

Getting to and around Hallstatt can be a bit challenging during peak season. Trains and buses are often fully booked, parking lots fill up quickly, and the famous ferry across the lake can have long wait times.

In September, everything becomes a bit more relaxed. Trains and buses are less crowded, there are fewer delays, and you might even be able to find last-minute accommodation or restaurant reservations.

Because you don’t have to worry about things like traffic back-ups, planning a day trip to nearby attractions like Dachstein Ice Caves or the Gosauseen becomes significantly easier.

Magical Mornings and Serene Sunsets

Because the village faces east, the mornings in Hallstatt are something truly special. In September, the sunrise times are a bit later than in summer, making it easier to wake up and catch the soft light spilling over the Dachstein mountains and touching the lake.

Misty mornings are common and create a dreamy, almost mystical atmosphere. As the fog lifts, it reveals layers of color and light that photographers and romantics alike will adore.

In the evening, sunsets reflect softly on the lake, and the dimming lights of the village cast shimmering trails across the water. It’s peaceful, poetic, and the perfect end to a day of exploration.

Goldilocks Weather in September: Not too hot, not too cold!

Hallstatt weather in September, if you ask me, it’s simply perfect! I’m not a fan of the heat but am also not too interested in freezing while I explore.

Temperatures in September hover around a crisp 50–65°F (10–18°C), not too hot, not too cold! Daytime temperatures typically hover between 15°C to 22°C (59°F to 72°F), making it ideal for outdoor exploration without the intense summer heat or the chill of late autumn.

The cooler nights are perfect for cozy dinners by the lakeside or sipping mulled wine or hot tea on a terrace.

Average Rainfall in September

Rain isn’t uncommon here in fall but that shouldn’t put a damper on your travels. Just remember to pack your rain gear! I’m all about sitting on a covered lakeside patio with a drink or warm meal and watching a cozy rain come down making pretty patterns on the normally glass-like lake!

The average rainfall here in September is 162 cm (or 6 inches.) Average Rainy Days in September = 12

rainy day activities:

  • Visit the Bone Chapel
  • Explore both of the churches in Hallstatt
  • Visit the Hallstatt History Museum
  • Explore the underground roman ruins under Dachstein Janu Sports shop
  • Visit the salt mines
  • Grab a covered seat on the Hallstatt Ferry and take a round trip excursion

Sunset

Another reason I love to travel to Hallstatt in September is that you still have plenty of daylight to get in a full day of sightseeing. Sunset arrives progressively earlier through the month, so it stays light longer at the beginning of the month than at the end of the month.

In fact, there’s almost an hour difference between the beginning and end of September. If you plan to pack your day full of outdoor activities, you’ll want to plan accordingly.

If you factor in the sunrise and sunset, you’ll get almost 2 more hours of daylight at the beginning of the month than at the end of the month.

September 1: 7:46 PM (sunrise 6:24 AM)
September 15: 7:17 PM (sunrise 6:43 AM)
September 30: 6:47 PM (sunrise 7:03 AM)

What to wear in Hallstatt in September

Temperatures are generally mild in September in Hallstatt. I usually wear comfortable clothes and layers. I tend to warm up fast, so I wear a short sleeve t-shirt in case it’s on the warmer side that day.

Be sure to bring a sweater or jacket in case it gets chilly after the sun goes down, or for early mornings. Heck if you’re cold natured you may want those sleeves all throughout the day!

You can’t tell here but I’m wearing a short sleeve shirt in Hallstatt in mid-September. I didn’t even need a jacket on this day!

You’ll want to wear comfortable shoes. High fashion footwear might look good in your Instagram photos but if you are here to explore the town, they just aren’t practical.

Sneakers or hiking shoes are a better and safer option for cobblestone streets, stairs, and inclines you’ll find around Hallstatt. You’ll be grateful for shoes with good traction and support.

Be sure to bring your rain gear. An umbrella, poncho, or raincoat will do.

What to do in Hallstatt in September

One reason that I love to visit Hallstatt in September is because it’s still warm enough to experience all that the Alpine village has to offer, including lake activities!

I mean if you really want to avoid crowds you could come in winter and while you’ll experience snow dusted landscapes, you won’t be able to enjoy as many outdoor activities…not without freezing that is! Yes, it does get quite cold here in winter!

Here are the top things to do in Hallstatt in September:

Lakeside Strolls

Take a leisurely walk along Lake Hallstatt’s edge. The water, calm and mirror-like, reflects the changing hues of the surrounding foliage, creating a surreal landscape.

There are trails that run along the lakeside and are the perfect place for idyllic strolls!

Hiking Trails and Alpine Air

Nearby hiking routes like the Echerntal Trail wind through forests and past waterfalls. September’s cooler weather makes longer treks more enjoyable, and there’s less foot traffic, a big perk if you’re a bit antisocial like me.

Head on up the mountain:

There are several worthwhile activities on the mountain that overlooks Hallstatt Lake. There are a couple of ways to get up there.

My chosen way of getting up to the salt mines or the viewing platform is to take the funicular which offers spectacular views as you ascend the mountainside. However, if you’re up for a challenge, September’s cooler weather makes the hike up to the mine particularly pleasant. Either way works!

At the top, don’t miss the Skywalk platform, a jaw-dropping balcony suspended 1,300 feet above Hallstatt that makes for unforgettable selfies and panoramic shots.

The salt mine tour is one of the most popular attractions in the area. Salzwelten salt mines are believed to be the oldest in the world, dating back over 7,000 years.

Boat Rides and Kayaking

You’ll still be able to rent an electric boat in September. Make your way down to the water where you’ll find boat rentals. My husband drives, I sit back and enjoy seeing the town from a different perspective!

We rented an electric boat to get out onto Lake Hallstatt for peace and quite and to get a unique vantage of town for photos
We like to get out on Lake Hallstatt relaxation and the views!

If you arrive by car or bus another option is to hop aboard a scenic ferry, simply buy a round-trip ticket. Glide your way across the lake for outstanding panoramic views!

Explore the Village Streets

Hallstatt is best discovered by foot. Cobblestone lanes twist past gingerbread-style homes adorned with flower boxes and carved wooden balconies. In September, colorful flower boxes are still in bloom.

My favorite side trips from Hallstatt

Here are more things to add to your September Hallstatt Itinerary

Five Fingers Viewing Platform:

This adrenaline-tinged viewpoint near the Krippenstein summit juts out over the edge of a cliff and offers a breathtaking panorama of the Dachstein mountain range, especially dramatic after the leaves have started to change in late September. Do you love green vistas? Me! I do! You can experience those at least through mid-September!

Take the cable car (section 1+2 leads Five Fingers lookout). On clear September mornings, the visibility can be extraordinary, revealing vast forests and shimmering lakes under crisp blue skies. You’ll have to make your way to Obertraun, 11 km from Hallstatt, for this but the amazing views are worth the trek!

The same cable car leads you to Dachstein Giant Ice Cave!

Gosausee

Gosausee is my top choice for a midday escape!! This stunning little lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and has a picturesque 1.5-hour trail that surrounds this crystal clear emerald-green alpine lake. You can get full details on how to plan the perfect Gosausee trip! Gosausee is located 21 km from Hallstatt.

Eating and drinking in Hallstatt in September

Cooler weather calls for comfort food! (AND Fewer crowds also mean less wait times at the local restaurants, yay to that!)

Added bonus, it’s still possible to dine al fresco in the month of September! I love to enjoy a lakeside meal and add a touch of “amazing views” to my dining experience!

Austrian cuisine takes a delicious turn in September with the arrival of hearty comforting dishes with seasonal ingredients like wild mushrooms, game, root vegetables, and fresh cheeses…a delightful addition to cooler evenings!

Look for dishes like:

  • Wild mushroom goulash
  • Roast venison with red cabbage
  • Knödel (dumplings) with seasonal herbs
  • Freshly baked Zwetschkenkuchen (plum cake)

Here are some particularly “warming” dishes perfect for chilly fall evenings:

  • Bauernschmaus, this traditional Austrian dish consisting of a hearty plate of smoked meats, sauerkraut, bread dumplings, and potatoes, is a regional classic.
  • Apfelstrudel: Warm crispy layers of pastry with a fruit center. Apple and Cherry are popular choices. You may detect notes of cinnamon, my absolute favorite fall scent!
  • Kasnocken: Austria’s answer to mac and cheese, the OG comfort dish! These cheesy noodles topped with crispy onions are pure comfort.
  • Warm drinks include hot spiced wine, coffee, and a wide selection of teas to ward off the morning and evening chill.

Staying the Night in Hallstatt

One of my very favorite “Hallstatt crowd beating tips” is to overnight here. You’ll be able to experience the town blissfully crowd free in the evening and early morning.

Staying overnight invites you to slow down and savor each moment in a very special Austrian village.

Mornings and evenings also present the perfect opportunity to get the best photos of one of the most photographed places in Europe.

You’ll get a different perspective when a morning mist blankets the lake or at sunset, when a golden glow sets in on the entire scene.

You’ll find somewhat better rates this time of the year compared to the summer high season rates.

Hallstatt has a mix of boutique inns, rustic Gasthauses, lakeside hotels, and B&Bs. There are dozens of hotels and rentals with lake views. Imagine yourself savoring an early morning sipping a coffee while you watch the swans swim their way around the shimmering lake…PERFECTION!

I have an entire article with my best tips on how to avoid Hallstatt’s oppressive crowds!

Shopping in Hallstatt in September

September is the perfect time to pick up a few autumnal finds and artisan treasures.

Pick up some decorative pottery, take it home and cook up the perfect soup or stew to keep you and your family warm on a nippy fall day.

Shop for hand-knitted scarves, hats, and mittens, a fashionable choice for the impending winter.

Hallstatt is famous for its salt-based products. Pick up some locally mined salt, take it home and create your own scrub to scrub away dry winter skin. Just add your favorite oil. Popular choices include jojoba, olive, avocado, coconut, grapeseed, argan, or almond oils.

The area is also known for its woodworking. Christmas is just around the corner. Wood carvings, miniature chalets, mountain scenes, and forest animals crafted by local craftsmen from native wood would make perfect Christmas presents.

I purchased several wooden toys in Hallstatt and some adorable woodland carvings.

Local Festivals and Events in September

September is the perfect time to experience the area’s harvest traditions. Autumn in the Hallstatt area is a time when farmers begin harvests, winemakers celebrate grape season, and folkloric traditions come alive.

How to get to Hallstatt

You can arrive in Hallstatt by car, bus, or train / ferry combination. The train, bus, and ferry run 365 per year (always double check this information before traveling.)

There have been times when the car tunnel that leads into Hallstatt has been closed due to protesters, or parking lots are completely full.

I know people who have arrived in town, drove around looking for parking and ultimately left. You should not have to worry about this problem in the month of September. If you are nervous about parking just arrive early in the morning and you should have no trouble finding parking.

The Ferry runs 365 days per year.

If you want to avoid crowds, consider getting out of the historic center during midday and coming back late in the evening or even in the early morning and you may just have the place all to yourself!

When is the best month to visit Hallstatt?

Based on several factors, the month of September wins my vote for “The Best Month to Visit Hallstatt” award! Temperatures are still quite nice for exploring and even participating in outdoor activities and summer crowds have dissipated. The landscape is awash with green, and flowers are still in bloom, not to mention the fact that summer prices are in the past!

Hallstatt is undeniably enchanting no matter when you visit. But September offers that rare combination of natural beauty, ideal weather, cultural richness, and peaceful ambiance that turns a simple trip into something extraordinary.
