Königssee Tour: The best tours to stunning Königssee Lake

Nestled within the pristine landscapes of southern Germany, Königssee Lake captivates visitors with its emerald waters, towering mountains, and serene landscapes. It is truly stunning!

Why Visit Königssee?

Often referred to as the “King Lake,”Königssee is one of Germany’s deepest and most picturesque lakes. This natural gem is framed by the imposing peaks of the Bavarian Alps, including the famous Watzmann Mountain, Germany’s third highest peak.

What draws me here are the lake’s crystal-clear waters which are fed by surrounding glaciers, and the reflection of the majestic mountains on the glassy mirror-like surface of the lake. It all creates quite the picture! In fact it’s so perfect it doesn’t look quite real.

If you are craving a visit to one of my very favorite places in Bavaria but aren’t much of a DIY’er I recommend taking a tour because you don’t want to miss out on this amazing experience!

Why take a Königssee Tour?

I’m always down for jumping in the car and seeing where it takes me! Preferably, I’ll find myself somewhere in nature. But I have to admit, there are some distinct advantages to joining a group tour and if it’s in the budget, private tours are the way to go! Not a big spender? • Save the hassle of driving. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery instead of having to navigate roads, gas up the vehicle…you get the idea!
• If you are unfamiliar with public transportation, and don’t care to drive, a tour is an easy option. Maybe you just don’t feel like hassling with bus schedules, or wasting your precious time sitting around waiting for the next bus to come along.

Königsee Tour From Munich

I’ll admit it, I’m not a big city person so I can’t say that I’ve spent much time in Munich but here are some of my things to do in Munich:

For this tour you’ll need to make your way to Schönau am Königssee. If you don’t have a car, this area is easily accessible by bus from the surrounding area. You can search your public transportation options on rome2rio.

The best way to see Königssee is by embarking on a boat tour from the village of Schönau am Königssee where you’ll experience some of Bavaria’s most breathtaking scenery. I felt a little as if I were in a dream as the electric-powered passenger tour boat glided its way across the shimmering fjord-like lake which is hemmed-in by the surrounding mountains. The tour will take you to some of the area’s most beautiful spots, which are only accessible by boat.

But wait there’s more! This one excursion is actually several amazing attractions all-in-one. Stops along the way include:

• St. Bartholomä: a picturesque pilgrimage church located on a peninsula along the western shore of Königssee. The church, with its iconic red domes, is set against the backdrop of the towering Watzmann Mountain, creating a postcard-perfect scene. It is truly something to behold.

You are free to disembark here to explore the area or take a short hike, before either catching the boat back or continuing the journey.

• Obersee: At the back of the lake you’ll find a magical world that is so picturesque you may not believe it is real! Beautiful Obersee was on my travel bucket list for a while and the day I was able to check it off of my list was a very good day! It truly is one of Germany’s prettiest spots.

A short trail winds its way to Obersee, a smaller, secluded lake located just a short walk from where the Seenschifffahrt boat docks. The hike takes about 15 minutes, your reward, the tranquil waters of one of Germany’s best hidden gems!

• Röthbachfall Waterfall: Continue on down the path to Röthbachfall Waterfall, Germany’s highest waterfall! There are a couple of good restaurants here too.

When is the best time to visit Königssee?

Boat tours on the lake run year-round, Summer, Winter, spring, and fall. Winter transforms Königssee into a peaceful, snow-covered wonderland. The lake’s surface often freezes over, creating a stunning icy landscape but no worries, the boats are covered and heated. If you’re visiting in winter it’s a particularly good time to take a guided tour, leave the winter driving to someone else!

In Summer alpine meadows are blooming with wildflowers but it’s also high season for tourists and that means crowds. On the flip side, there are more frequent boat departures in Summer. Spring and fall are considered shoulder-season, you’ll have less tourists to deal with.

Note about winter visits
