How to Get to the Loreley Statue on the Rhine: Complete Visitor Guide

Lovely Loreley, she’s one of the Rhine River’s greatest attractions! Hundreds of thousands of tourists gaze upon this dark and mysterious legendary German figure as they float by on lazy Rhine River cruises each year. I don’t know about you, but I was craving a closer look! 

Reaching the Loreley statue is a tiny bit of a  challenge but I’m going to fill you in on how to get there so you can gaze upon her up close and personal, and even have your photo taken with this famous German Frau!

What is the Loreley Statue anyway??? The Lorelei Statue

Loreley is a legendary figure from German folklore, a beautiful siren who lured sailors to their deaths with her beauty and enchanting song. Distracted by her the ships crashed into the rocks. 

Loreley the water-sprite or a siren that is the inspiration for legends, ballads and poems. Legend has it that a maiden, so distraught after her love was unfaithful, drowned herself here. It is said that she avenges herself upon unsuspecting sailors by wrecking boats on the jagged rocks here.

The famous German poet, Heinrich Heine, penned an ode to Loreley.

“The loveliest young maiden sits

So beautifully up there…She combs her golden hair…And while she combs, she sings;

It grips the sailor in the ship…His eyes are only looking up, Not at the rocks below. I believe that in the end the waves Devoured ship and boy…”

The bronze sculpture sits on rocks, her long hair flowing, gazing contemplatively at the Rhine River, singing her enchanting song to passing ships. Is she looking for her next victims? 

While the legend is romantic, it likely originated from the very real dangers of this UNESCO World Heritage section of the Rhine, where the narrow passage, strong currents, and rocky riverbed made navigation treacherous before modern improvements.

There are actually two main Loreley/Lorelei locations along the Rhine River. Both are worth a visit, just make sure you know which one you are headed for. 

The Loreley Rock (Lorelei Rock) Viewpoint (Aussichtspunkt Loreleyfelsen, 56346 St. Goarshausen, Germany)

The famous Loreley Rock (also spelled Lorelei Rock) is a massive slate cliff rising 132 meters (433 feet) above the Rhine River near Sankt Goarshausen on the eastern bank of the Rhine. 

At the top of Loreley Rock, you’ll find:

• A modern visitor center
• Panoramic viewing platforms
• Cultural exhibitions
• The open-air amphitheater
• Walking trails

Important: The road that climbs to the top of Loreley Rock is separate from Sankt Goarhausen. If you want to visit both the statue and the rock’s summit, you’ll need to drive to each location separately.

The Loreley Statue

The Loreley Statue is a separate monument located at the base of the rock formation.

This statue is what most visitors are actually looking for when they search for “Loreley Statue,” and it’s the focus of this guide.

Where Exactly Is the Loreley Statue Located?

The Loreley Statue sits at the riverside in Sankt Goarhausen, a small town on the eastern (right) bank of the Rhine River. Specifically, you’ll find it along the Rhine promenade (Rheinuferstraße) between the town center and the base of the Loreley Rock.

I put this address into my GPS and it took me right to the parking lot where the path to the statue begins, and where you’ll see this sign:

Coordinates: 50.1428° N, 7.7297° E (50.14754472213097, 7.727042505679607)

I drove, and I think that it’s the most efficient way to arrive. Driving offers the most flexibility for visiting the Loreley Statue and exploring the Rhine Valley at your own pace.

Drive time from popular nearby locations:

• From Frankfurt (approximately 1.5 hours)
• From Cologne (approximately 1.5 hours)
• From Koblenz (approximately 45 minutes)

Parking

As I said, there is a small parking lot right at the beginning of the path that leads to Loreley. Parking near the Loreley Statue can be limited, especially during peak tourist season (May-October). When I visited in early October there was only one other car in the lot and they were leaving just as I arrived.

I had the trail to myself on the way to the statue. I lingered near the statue and eventually another person came rushing down to get their Loreley statue photos made ahead of their entire tour bus. If you want to avoid crowds, shoot for visiting the rock in the early morning or late in the day. Midday is tour bus time!

Parkplatz Hafenmole: Parking lot, Rheinstraße, 56346 St. Goarshausen, Germany (FREE) Located right where you access the walk to the statue. If you put “The Loreley Statue” into your GPS it will bring you right here. From this parking area you’ll need to walk another 10 minutes to the statue.

If the lot is full try these instead. 

Public Parking Areas in Sankt Goarhausen: (distances and walking times are to the beginning of the path to the statue. From there you’ll need to walk another 10 minutes.

• Parkplatz Marktplatz – In the town center, about 10-minute walk. 
• Parkplatz Rheinstraße (free) Rheinstraße 8, 56346 St. Goarshausen, Germany (900 meters: 12-minute walk)
• Parkplatz Car Park 56346 Sankt Goarshausen, Germany (1.2 km: 16-minute walk) About 20 spaces. Payment in COINS ONLY. €0.50 for 1/2 hour.

How to Get to the Loreley Statue by Public Transportation

As stated, in my opinion the best way to visit is by car. It’s fast and easy, and I like to be on my own schedule. However, if driving isn’t a possibility, the Rhine Valley is well-connected by Germany’s excellent public transportation network, making it easy to visit the Loreley Statue car-free.

By Train

The nearest train station is Sankt Goarhausen Bahnhof, which sits on the Rhine’s right bank railway line. The train station is a 2.2 km (30 minute) walk from the monument.

Train Connections:

• Check the Deutsche Bahn (DB) website and app to seamlessly plan your public transportation options. 
• Train line: RB26 (Rhine Valley Railway)

From the Train Station to the Statue:

1. Exit Sankt Goarhausen station
2. Turn right and walk toward the Rhine River (about 5 minutes)
3. Turn left along the Rhine promenade (Rheinuferstraße)
4. Walk south for approximately 10-15 minutes
5. The statue will be on your right, directly at the water’s edge. 

The walk from the station is pleasant, following the river with beautiful views across to Sankt Goar and the ruins of Burg Rheinfels castle on the hillside.

By Bus

Bus service in this rural area is limited, but there are some options:

• Local bus line connects Sankt Goarhausen with surrounding villages
• Check current schedules at www.rmv.de (Rhine-Main Transport Association) or on the Deutsche Bahn Website
• the closest bus stop: St. Goarshausen Marktplatz Bussteig A, at 56346 Sankt Goarshausen, Germany. It’s a 1.6 km (22 minute) walk from the statue.

Walking Directions: From Sankt Goarhausen to the Loreley Statue

Once you’re in Sankt Goarhausen, here are the detailed walking directions to reach the statue:

From Sankt Goarhausen Train Station (2.2 km / 30-minute walk):

1. Exit the station and turn right onto Bahnhofstraße
2. Walk toward the Rhine River (you’ll see it ahead) – about 300 meters
3. Reach the Rhine promenade (Rheinuferstraße) and turn left (south)
4. Continue along the riverside path for approximately 1 kilometer
5. Look for: The distinctive bronze statue on your right, positioned on rocks at the water’s edge. 
6. Keep going: if you want to arrive at the statue you’ll need to walk to the parking area ahead and then take the path down to the statue.

The statue is hard to miss once you’re on the promenade. It’s positioned prominently with the Rhine flowing beside it and the Loreley Rock visible in the distance behind you.

From the Ferry Landing (1.9 km / 25-minute walk):

1. Exit the ferry in Sankt Goarhausen
2. Turn left along the Rhine promenade
3. Walk south along the riverside path
4. Continue for about 1 kilometer
5. The statue will appear on your right at the water’s edge
6. Keep going: if you want to arrive at the statue you’ll need to walk to the parking area ahead and then take the path down to the statue.

Combine your visit with a Rhine River Cruise

Cruising the Rhine is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Consider taking part in one before or after you visit the statue. Cruises conveniently leave from Sankt Goarhausen just down the road. Depending on which direction you decide to cruise, you can wave hello to Loreley as you pass, and hope that she minds her manners and leaves your boat safely intact!

My favorite Rhine River Cruise line is the K-D Line (Köln-Düsseldorf Line) Take a short 2-hour cruise or go further! It’s up to you.

The Path

The actual statue is located at the tip of a long thin piece of land that juts out into the river, so you’ll need to travel a bit further by foot to reach it. It’s about 800 meters from the parking area (Parkplatz Hafenmole). It will take you about 10 minutes to walk there. There’s a sign that states that the path is rough, and I can tell you it is! 

Just looking at it, you can’t really tell, but it’s a chore walking on these stones! It’s doable, just take your time.

If you really want to avoid the sketchy walk, there’s a path down below that runs parallel with this path. It’s going to be much easier walking but it’s not as atmospheric and you’ll miss out on the views from the higher, all be it, rougher path.

The walk along the Rhine promenade is relatively flat and paved, making it accessible for most visitors. However:

• The final approach to the statue involves some uneven ground and rocks
• The statue sits on a rocky outcrop right at the water
• Getting very close may be challenging for those with mobility limitations
• No dedicated wheelchair access to the statue itself

What to Bring:

• Comfortable walking shoes and possibly hiking poles to help navigate the uneven terrain 

Safety Considerations:

• The rocks on the path leading to the statue can be slippery when wet. Consider taking the lower (less scenic) path instead

Final Tips for your Visit

1. Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially if visiting on weekends or in summer
2. Combine your visit with a Rhine cruise for the full experience
3. Visit nearby Sankt Goar across the river for lunch and castle exploration, it’s an easy ferry ride across the Rhine. 
4. Allow time to simply sit and enjoy the river views – it’s not just about the photo

Visiting the Loreley Rock Viewpoint (Separate Location)

Many visitors want to see both the statue and the famous viewpoint at the top of Loreley Rock. These are two separate locations requiring different routes.

How to Reach Loreley Rock Summit:

By Car:

• From Sankt Goarhausen, follow signs to “Loreley Felsen” or “Loreley Besucherzentrum”
• The winding road climbs the hillside
• Parking available at the top (fees apply)
• 15-minute drive from the statue area

By Foot:

• Hiking trail from Sankt Goarhausen to the summit
• Steep climb, approximately 2-3 kilometers
• Allow 45-60 minutes
• Marked trails, moderately difficult
• Not recommended in poor weather
