The Rhine River, one of Europe’s longest and most picturesque rivers, is famous for its stunning landscape. The steep hills and terraced vineyards of the Middle Rhine River Valley are dotted with historic buildings, ancient castles, fortresses, and palaces.

The German corner carved out by the river is particularly dense with numerous castles! Today many of these historic castles have been repurposed as hotels, restaurants, and museums.

I fell in love with Germany’s Rhine River Valley when I took my first Rhine River Cruise, and it is still one of my favorite places in all of Europe to explore.

From medieval strongholds to baroque palaces and romantic ruins, there’s something for everyone on the Rhine! You’ll experience stunning scenery, historical architecture from ancient times, storybook villages and small towns, and legends of robber barons.

This article focuses on the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The entire stretch between Wiesbaden and Bonn is often called the “Romantic Rhine” for its charming villages, vineyards, and iconic castles.

You can start your journey at Frankfurt Airport and make your way all the way to Bonn if your fancy takes you that far. It’s 166 km between Bonn and Frankfurt International Airport, a mere 1 hour 45 minutes by car.

Wiesbaden and Nearby Palaces

1-Biebrich Palace (Schloss Biebrich)

Built in the early 18th century, Biebrich Palace is a grand Baroque-style structure overlooking the Rhine. The palace is now used by the Hessian state government. Next to the palace is the expansive Biebrich Castle Park, an English landscape garden which also contains Mosburg ruins.

2-Wiesbaden City Palace (Stadtschloss Wiesbaden)

Located in the heart of Wiesbaden, this Neo-Classical palace was constructed in the 19th century and later became the residence of the Prussian royal family. Today, it houses the Hessian State Parliament.

3-Schloss Freudenberg

Today, this early 1900’s villa is known for its focus on sensory experiences. Experience bees, a children’s garden, waterworks, a castle kitchen, 120 experience stations, and more!

4-Schloss Waldthausen

Schloss Waldthausen was built around 1910, with total property costs reaching an astonishing 18 million marks. The castle is surrounded by the lush forests of the Lenneberg Forest, which includes various hiking trails. While the castle has remained empty for years the surrounding gardens and park are freely accessible to the public.

Eltville am Rhein & Ingelheim am Rhein Castles

5-Burg Crass Castle

Burg Crass is located right on the banks of the Rhine and is one of the area’s oldest buildings. Also known as Rheinberg Castle, it was built in 1332, however it is possible that a Roman Villa, dating from around 1000 to 1100, was previously located on the site.

6-Eltville Castle (Kurfürstliche Burg Eltville)

Dating back to the 14th century, rustic Eltville Castle is a former residence of the Archbishops of Mainz. Today, it’s home to the Eltville Tourist Information office, as well as several museums located in the castle tower. Visitors can access the property via a wall walk and a moated bridge. In the castle courtyard visitors will find a lush rose garden.

7-Hattenheim Castle (Hattenheimer Burg)

This adorable little 11th century castle tower is today the headquarters of the town’s Castle & Beautification Association. The club regularly holds its wine tavern in the castle in June and the potato festival in September. Stop by any time of year to feel the history and to view this beauty from the outside.

8-Weingut Schloss Vollrads, Oestrich-Winkel

In 1330 a residential tower was built here on Roman foundations. Over the years it morphed into a sprawling castle estate that is today home to one of the oldest wineries in Germany. The 80 hectares vineyard produces only Riesling grapes and wine. Stop by for a wine tasting, experience one of the many events, or explore the surrounding hiking trails.

9-Ingelheim Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz Ingelheim)

Ingelheim Imperial Palace dates to the time of Charlemagne in the 8th century. The site is also home to the Imperial Palace Archaeological Zone where you’ll discover the excavated remains of the palace buildings which were previously buried over the centuries.

10-Burg Schwarzenstein

A romantic 19th-century castle surrounded by vineyards, Burg Schwarzenstein is now a luxury castle hotel and restaurant with a spectacular view of the Rhine.

11-Schloss Johannisberg

Founded in the year 1100, Schloss Johannisberg bills itself as the world’s first Riesling winery. The vineyards encompass 50 hectares, the castle forest, another 300 hectares. More than 25,000 precious wines are stored here in the 900-year-old abbey cellar.

12-Schloss Schönborn

16th century Schönborn Castle (formerly Stockheimer Hof ) is a mid-century Renaissance noble estate in Rheingau. Today it is an event venue, but you could stop by and take a few exterior photos of this cute castle.

Rüdesheim am Rhein Area Castles

13-Burg Marktburg (Vorderburg)

The Vorderburg are the remains of an old 12th century fortress which was destroyed by French troops in 1640. Only the defensive tower remains of the old castle. The adjoining residential building was added around 1663.

14-Brömserhof Castle

Brömserhof is a 15th century knight’s residence. However, parts of the building date back to 1310. Today, the castle houses a museum showcasing 350 mechanical musical instruments.

15-Boosenburg

This small 12th century castle near Rüdesheim is surrounded by scenic vineyards. Today, all that remains of the castles is the keep. The property is privately owned by the Carl Jung winery, who has been producing alcohol free wines since 1908. The castle can only be viewed from the outside.

16-Brömserburg

Since 1950, 12th century Brömserburg has housed the Rheingau Wine Museum (may be closed for renovation. Check the website for new developments or view the castle from the exterior.) In summer the castle is the location of a winegarden and music events.

17-Burgruine Ehrenfels

Medieval Ehrenfels Castle, rebuilt in the year 1212, is located in the fairytale town of Rüdesheim am Rhein. Once used as a fortress to protect the town, Ehrenfels was destroyed in the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War, when it was left in ruins. Stop by for stunning views of the Rhine River, surrounding vineyards, and the mouse tower down below.

18-burg Klopp Castle

A scenic 13th century medieval hilltop Klopp Castle Fortress provides a panoramic view of the Rhine. The castle is so important to the community of Bingen that they have lovingly rebuilt it several times after its repeated destruction. Today, the 19th century Neo-Gothic rebuild is the location of the town administration’s municipality building.

19-Burg Rheinstein Castle

This tidy little 14th century River Rhine castle is one of my own personal favorites. It is reminiscent of the perfect little knight’s castle, immaculate, compact, and almost homey. The working portcullis and drawbridge add oodles of charm, and don’t miss the 500-year-old grapevine in the courtyard that still produces grapes!

20-Burg Reichenstein Castle, Trechtingshausen

Medieval Burg Reichenstein Castle, also known as Falkenburg, was built in the 11th century. After being destroyed in the 13th century the castle was left in ruin until the 19th century when it was restored as a neo-gothic style beauty! Visitors can explore the castle along with its museum.

21-Burg Sooneck Castle

Get a glimpse into the lives of German nobility at 11th century medieval castle Sooneck. Sooneck was destroyed by French troops in 1689 and later rebuilt in the 19th century as a royal hunting lodge. The castle complex has a distinct “Medieval Ages feel” with gardens, terraces, scenic views and a museum with historic artifacts.

22 Heimburg Castle

The small but charming 13th-century Heimburg castle fell into disrepair in the 16th century. In 1689 it was destroyed by the French during the War of the Palatinate Succession. Sadly, the ruins then served the local population as a quarry. Around the castle you’ll find an approximately 3 km long tourist trail full of fairy-tale figures.

23-Ruin “Fürstenberg Castle”

Built in the 13th century, Fürstenberg Castle is now a ruin. It once served as a toll station to control river traffic along this section of the Rhine. The castle includes many features indicative of a medieval castle including a spiral staircase to the keep, moated walls, a gatehouse, round tower, and a ring wall. The twenty-five-meter-high tower reminded French poet Victor Hugo of “distant lands.”

24-Burg Nollig

This ancient structure was built around 1300 and is yet another castle which was positioned in a strategic location to monitor river traffic. Though today in ruins, Burg Nollig’s has that mystical allure so indicative of Rhine Valley castles. A hiking trail that starts in Lorch takes you through forests and vineyards, and finally to the castle.

25-Hostel Burg Stahleck (Jugendherberge Burg Stahleck Bacharach)

12th century medieval castle Burg Stahleck, once a stronghold for the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, is now a youth hostel. The hostel offers modern rooms and affordable overnight stays for budget travelers dreaming of a castle stay. Overlooking the town of Bacharach, it’s a truly “stepped back in time” experience.

27-Pfalzgrafenstein Castle

14th century Pfalzgafenstein is located on a tiny island called Falkenau in the middle of the Rhine River. This little fortress originated as a toll station for boats passing through the river. Pfalzgrafenstein Castle can only be reached from Kaub by passenger ferry. (Castle entrance fee includes the passenger ferry.)

28-Burg Gutenfels

Medieval Gutenfels Fortress was built around 1200. Today the restored 13th century castle serves as a hotel and event venue that offers a castle garden and spectacular views overlooking the Rhine and surrounding vineyards. The old world decor and furnishings in this castle are simply dreamy!

29-Schoenburg Castle

Schönburg Castle, one of the best-preserved castles on the Rhine, dates back to at least the 10th century. The restored one-time fortress now serves as a boutique hotel and event venue. Romantic rooms transport guests and visitors to the Middle Ages.

30-Burg Katz

Burg Katz Castle is a privately owned 14th-century medieval fortress. In my opinion, this distinctly fairytale castle, with its fanciful towers and turrets, is one of the prettiest castles on the Rhine.

31-Burg Reichenberg

I love a good castle ruin! Reichenburg is an impressive 14th century medieval castle ruin, which was once home to local nobility. This castle is set further back from the river, but is only 6 km from St. Goarshausen. Reichenberg can only be viewed from outside.

32-Rheinfels Castle

Burg Rheinfels Castle is a 13th-century medieval hilltop castle fortress located in the town of Sankt Goar. The complex was at one time one of the largest castles on the mighty Rhine. Destroyed by French troops in the 1600’s, Rheinfels was never again restored to its former glory. Visitors can explore the substantial ruins and the castle museums.

While the ruins are expansive and quite old, it’s really not one of my favorite castles. However the views from Rheinfels are impressive, and the restaurant and hotel are dreamy!

Sankt Goar/Goarshausen to Koblenz

33-Burg Maus

Originally named Burg Peterseck, this 14th century castle later received the moniker of Burg Maus or “Mouse Castle” from the rival Katz Castle (Cat Castle) located just upstream. As we all know, the cat eats the mouse! Check the website for information on concerts, author readings, castle tours, wine tastings, and falconry and flight demonstrations.

34-Burg Liebenstein Castle

35-Sterrenberg Castle

This more than 800-year-old Imperial castle is one of the oldest surviving hilltop castles on the Middle Rhine.

36-Electoral Castle (Kurtrierische Burg)

This fortress on the left bank of the Rhine in the town center of Boppard was once used as a seat of power by the Archbishops of Trier. It was built around 1265 and today houses the town museum.

37-Schloss Philippsburg

This 16th century Renaissance castle was thoughtfully built at the base of Marksburg Castle by the Langrave for his wife as a widow’s residence. He wanted her to have more manageable accommodations after his passing.

38-Marksburg Castle

The 13th century hilltop Marksburg Castle treats visitors to an authentic medieval experience. It was constructed as a defensive structure and has remained intact for over 900 years. It’s a typical medieval masterpiece with a wine cellar, herb garden, great hall, knight’s hall, chapel, armory, keep, horse stable, smithy, drawbridge, and kitchen.

Today Marksburg is the headquarters of the German Castle Association.

40-Burg Lahneck

Medieval Burg Lahneck castle, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Lahn Rivers, was built in 1226. The last 12 of the Knights Templars are said to have sought refuge in the castle, where they perished in a heroic fight to the death. The tidy little castles also inspired a poem from the famous poet Goethe.

Today, Lahneck offers camping and swimming facilities.

41-Stolzenfels Castle, Koblenz

Stolzenfels Castle is a 13th century medieval fortress that was transformed into a palace in the Gothic Revival style in 1823. Inside: historic photos and paintings, weapons and neo-Gothic furnishings, palace chapel, and Knights’ Hall.

42-Schloss Koblenz Electoral Palace (Kurfürstliches Schloss Koblenz)

The stately Electoral Palace was built in the 18th century and served as the residence of the Electors of Trier. Today, the sprawling early French classicism palace, which sits directly on the Rhine, houses the regional government offices. The terrace garden facing the Rhine is accessible to visitors.

43-Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (Festung Ehrenbreitstein)

The sprawling 16th century Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, located where the Rhine meets the Mosel River, escaped destruction after the end of World War due to its historical value. For a time, the American flag could be seen flying over the fortress. Today, the fortress is home to the State Museum of Koblenz. You can access the fortress via cable car.

44-Schloss Sayn

18th century Schloss Sayn boasts a museum, magnificent castle park, and butterfly garden.

45-Burgruine Sayn

On the hill above Schloss Sayn, you’ll find the 800-year-old ruins of Burg Sayn. Make your way up for panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. The castle can be reached either via a short walk from the Schloss Sayn Butterfly Garden or by car.

46-Weißer Turm

The White Tower, also called the Owl Tower, is an old customs and residential tower first mentioned in 1550. In the 18th century, the tower was converted into a prison. The White Tower now houses the local history museum of the town of Weißenthurm.

47-Schloss Neuwied

Built in the late 17th century, Schloss Neuwied is today a private residence. The castle was rebuilt in the early 18th century using Versailles as an example. The castle park, most of which is open to the public, is perfect for a respite and leisurely stroll.

48-Altwied Castle

12th century Altwied Castle, now a scenic ruin, is tucked away in the hills, 10 km from Neuwied. It’s perfect for visitors interested in medieval history and off-the-beaten-path exploration. The ruins are distinctly romantic and surrounded by an atmospheric village and magical trails.

49-Namedy Castle

50-Burg Rheineck

Hilltop Rheineck Castle began as an 11th century medieval structure from the 11th century, that today stands in ruin. Roman antiquities found on the castle hill suggest that a Roman watchtower previously stood on this location.

51-Burg Arenfels Castle

Arenfels Castle is a 13th century medieval castle located in the town of Bad Hönningen. Both the name and facade of this magical castle have a distinct “Disney” vibe. It is known for its unique architecture, which includes 365 windows, 52 doors, and 12 towers.

52-Schloss Drachenburg

Fairytale Schloss Drachenburg, with its Gothic elements, was originally built in the late 1800’s. Of special interest at this castle is their festival of Fantasy, held annually in August. Attendees can expect clownery, acrobatics, juggling, tightrope walking, comedy as well as singing and music.

53-Kurfürstliches Schloss, Bonn

I went to high school in the big town of Bonn but I can’t ever recall visiting the palace! This grand Baroque palace was the former residence of the prince-electors of Cologne. In 1818 the palace was gifted to the University of Bonn by the Prussian king.

At this location visitors will find the impressive museum, Universitätsmuseum Bonn, an impressive museum and The Hofgarten, a large park in front of the main building.

How to get around the Rhine River Valley!

by car:

The best way, in my opinion, to get around the Rhine Valley is by car. It affords you all of the freedom to move when and where you choose. Since there are worthwhile castles on each side of the river you will want to familiarize yourself with the ferries along this section of the Rhine.

by public transportation:

If you don’t relish the thought of driving it’s fairly easy to reach most of the castles by train, or by a train and bus or taxi combination. The area is well serviced by regional train lines and there seems to be, if not a train station, then at least a train stop in even the tiniest local communities along the River Rhine. Train lines run on both the left and right bank of the river.

The best way to plan your public transportation is at either Deutsche Bahn, the official transit site in Germany, or on Rome2Rio.

By Cruise Ship:

River Cruise on the Rhine! Some consider a river cruise is the best way to see the Rhine! Companies like Viking River Cruises offer multi-day guided tours through this UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, these cruises are costly and last anywhere from 8 to 23 days! I prefer to do it myself!

You’ll have more time to explore the different castles at your leisure. And you needn’t miss out on the cruise experience either. You can take shorter cruises from different spots along the Rhine, like the 2-hour return trip cruise from Bacharach to St. Goar. The benefit of taking a cruise ship to see some of these castles is that the cruise director offers commentary on each.
